Radhika Kanaskar

Sustainability Program Lead
Federal Reserve Bank of Boston

Radhika built a sustainability program inside a federal institution, from scratch, from the inside.

Radhika Kanaskar’s work illustrates how sustainability initiatives often begin inside institutions that were not originally designed with these goals in mind.

She joined the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston in 2019 as a Systems Administrator. At that time, there was no formal sustainability program.

By 2021, she had established one. She became the institution’s first Sustainability Program Lead within the Real Estate Services Group.

Her work involved developing a strategy to reduce emissions and waste across a large, complex building system—spanning nearly one million square feet.

Building a sustainability function from scratch in a federal institution requires a combination of technical, organizational, and strategic capabilities.

It involves understanding building systems and emissions measurement. It also requires navigating internal processes, aligning stakeholders, and building credibility for a new area of work.

Radhika brings all of these elements together. Her background in Management Information Systems provided the analytical foundation to build measurement systems, which are often the first step in any sustainability effort.

What I’d love to discuss during the event

  • I built a sustainability program from scratch inside a federal institution with no playbook and significant inertia. The hardest part wasn’t technical. What’s been the hardest part for others?
  • Buildings are one of the most overlooked parts of an organization’s emissions footprint. Why do they get so little strategic attention compared to supply chains or products?
  • What does it actually mean to transform operations in an institution that wasn’t designed with sustainability in mind — and what’s the minimum viable first step?
