Jeffrey Richards

Senior Director, EHS
Alnylam

Jeff builds safety cultures from the inside out, because he believes EHS is a leadership discipline, not a compliance burden.

Jeff Richards has built his career around environmental health and safety, with a focus on how organizations create systems that are both compliant and effective.

As Senior Director of EHS at Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, he oversees environmental and safety management in a highly regulated biopharmaceutical environment.

His experience spans leadership roles at AstraZeneca, Genzyme, Sanofi, and Shire. This gives him a cross-company perspective on how different organizations approach safety, environmental responsibility & sustainability.

He has also served in the active and reserve components of the US Navy and in local community environmental roles, reflecting a broader commitment beyond corporate responsibilities.

Jeffrey’s approach emphasizes participatory systems, engaging people within organizations to identify risks early and build stronger safety and environmentally responsible cultures.

His work highlights how safety, environmental performance and sustainability are shaped as much by systems and culture as by policy.

What I’d love to discuss during the event

  • EHS and sustainability are being merged organizationally in a lot of companies. Is that a good idea — or does it risk diluting both?
  • Safety culture and sustainability culture have a lot in common. Has anyone here successfully transferred lessons from one to the other?
  • Where does compliance-driven EHS actually get in the way of building a genuinely safe and sustainable operation?
