The Role
We are looking for a Backend Software Engineer who takes pride in writing clean, scalable code and cares about the systems they build. You will work across the full backend stack — designing APIs, building data pipelines, integrating third-party services, and ensuring our platform performs reliably as we scale.
This is a hands-on engineering role with significant ownership. You will collaborate closely with product, data, and frontend teams to ship features that directly serve enterprise clients managing their sustainability programs.
What You Will Do
- Design and develop robust, scalable backend services and APIs in Java.
- Collaborate with product and engineering teams to translate requirements into clean, well-documented code.
- Build and maintain data pipelines for ingesting, processing, and serving large volumes of sustainability and emissions data.
- Integrate third-party services, APIs, and data providers into the Sprih platform.
- Contribute to system architecture decisions — data modeling, service design, and infrastructure choices.
- Troubleshoot performance bottlenecks, debug issues, and proactively improve system reliability.
- Write unit and integration tests; maintain high code quality through reviews and engineering best practices.
- Create and maintain technical documentation for systems, APIs, and architecture decisions.
- Stay current with backend engineering trends and advocate for improvements to engineering efficiency and developer experience.
What We Are Looking For
- 3+ years of backend software development experience, with a track record of shipping production systems.
- Strong proficiency in Java; familiarity with frameworks such as Spring Boot is a plus.
- Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, and system design principles.
- Experience designing and building RESTful APIs and microservices.
- Comfort working with relational and NoSQL databases; ability to write efficient queries and model data well.
- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Good instincts around software reliability — logging, monitoring, error handling, and graceful degradation.
- A collaborative mindset and the ability to communicate technical decisions clearly to non-engineers.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field from a recognized institution.

- Experience with data-intensive applications or analytics platforms.
- Exposure to sustainability, climate, or ESG-adjacent domains.
- Contributions to open-source projects or public engineering work.
- Experience in an early-stage or high-growth startup environment.
